Can too much Protein be Bad?
Protein is important for every cell in the human body from repairing tissue to creating healthy hormone levels, and scientific studies have proven that there are many benefits of consuming a gram of protein per pound of body weight. But are there any dangers of consuming too much protein?
There is not much downside in going over the recommended amount of protein, but there can be some dangers and disadvantages if you choose to ignore certain factors.
One thing to be careful of is making sure the body has a healthy balance of macro-nutrients. Carbs, fats and proteins all play a very important role in providing energy and creating ideal hormone levels for building muscle. If a person intends on getting more than the recommended amount of protein, then it would be important to get a healthy amount of carbs and fats along with it. A Recommonded and healthy macro nutrient ratio would look something like this: 30% Protein / 30% Fats / 40% Carbs.
Weight gain is typically not a huge concern when it comes to consuming protein as long as you are consistently being active and breaking down muscle in the gym. The body uses protein mainly for repairing and growing muscle tissue; the only way excess protein would ever be stored as fat is if the body is in a caloric surplus. Even in this state the body will prefer to store fats and carbs into fat rather than protein.
So keep in mind that a calorie is a calorie, and as long as a person is exercising on a regular basis and not significantly over calorie allowance for the day there will not be any need to worry about the body converting protein into fat.
Liver and Kidney Disease
If a person have been diagnosed with any form of liver or kidney disease they should be careful to not overdo it on protein because these organs are in charge of metabolizing it, and consuming too much could put a strain on the liver or kidney if it is not in optimal condition. A person unsure about the condition of their liver or kidney should consult a doctor.
