About

100% Casein by Optimum Nutrition has a very strong amino acid profile, in each scoop this company packs in 5g of BCAA’s and 5g of glutamine. On top of the excellent amino acid profile this protein will last in the body for up to 7 or 8 hours, making this product extremely valuable for right before bedtime.

Optimum Nutrition does a really great job at keeping unwanted fats and carbs down to a minimum. In each scoop of protein you receive only 120 calories, 24 grams of which comes from pure micellar protein powder.

The fact that this product contains only micellar casein is also a plus for anyone looking for a protein powder that is going to last the longest amount of time in the body. Some companies will include calcium caseinate in their product which does not last nearly as long as micellar.

(For more information on the difference between micellar casein and sodium caseinate see: Micellar vs Sodium Caseinate)

For this reason and many more reasons Optimum Nutrition's 100% Casein is one of the best casein products on the market when it comes to quality and value!

 Mixability  2 Star Rating

Micellar casein is one of the thickest and hardest to mix protein powders on the market. Mixing this product by spoon in water will often result in many clumps; it is best to mix it in a blender.

 Taste  4 Star Rating

Based upon reviews most people enjoy the taste of Optimum Nutrition's casein protein. The safest flavor to choose if taste is a concern would be chocolate supreme.

Ingredients

Micellar Casein - See Protein Type Guide
Cocoa(Processed with Alkali) - There are two main ways to extract cocoa powder out of beans. One way is called "The Broma Process" and the other is called "The Dutch Process" or "cocoa processed with Alkali" both processes are completely safe; the main difference is that the alkali method tends to be smoother and less bitter.
Cellulose Gum - Indigestible food that passes through your digestive system without being absorbed. It is used to add more bulk and texture to the protein shake.
Xanthan Gum - A carbohydrate/fiber that creates a more pleasing texture to the protein shake and helps keep ingredients blended together.
Carrageenan - Extracted from red seaweed, used as a thickener; adds no nutritional value.
Lecithin - A non-toxic additive to food that helps ingredients mix together better and improves shelf life.
Acesulfame Potassium - Artificial calorie-free sugar substitute.
Sucralose - Artificial calorie-free sugar substitute.
Aminogen - A patented ingredient added to protein that increases protein absorption. FDA recognizes this product to be safe.
Other Ingredients - Natural and artificial flavors, salt.

When to use

Specific times

Micellar Casein digests extremely slow and can last in the body for up to 7 or 8 hours! The best time to take this protein would be right before bed when the body has to go without protein for a long time. Another great time to take this supplement would be when a person knows there will be an extended period of time that they will not have any food to eat.

General times

Casein protein can be taken at just about any time during the day, it is great for taking in the morning or afternoon to last you through most of the day, and ultimately superior during the night right before bed.

When to use a different type of protein

Although Casein protein is great for taking any time during the day, taking a faster digesting protein would be beneficial immediately following strenuous exercise. This is because the body has a short period of time in which it will absorb and use protein rapidly and feeding your body with a fast digesting protein (such as whey) will provide much better results during this short window!

Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Reviews

Title/View:
High quality micellar protein powder, but the taste is pretty bad.

Introduction:
I'm very much into fitness and looking great, my goals are to build as much muscle as possible and look fantastic on the beach with no shirt. I regularly lift when I can, typically 2-3 days per week. I’ve tried numerous diets, but I always end up going back to If It Fits Your Macros (IIFYM) since most diets end up depriving me of food that I enjoy greatly.

I chose this product because I needed a long lasting protein product to take right before bed and I figured optimum nutrition was the most popular so I decided to try it.

Flavor/Taste: 3 Star Rating
The flavor that I bought was called “chocolate supreme” and I was very disappointed with the taste. Coming from using Optimum Nutrition's Whey in the same flavor I thought it would taste the same which would have been great; instead it had a taste that is hard to describe, it wasn’t repulsive…but it wasn’t anything that I wanted to take my time drinking either. It has a somewhat of a chemical like taste to it.

Cost/Value: 5 Star Rating
It seems like optimum nutrition competitively prices all of their products, so the cost was a little bit cheaper than most of the other micellar casein protein powders out there.

Mixability: 3 Star Rating
The mixability of this protein was also a disappointment; again I compare everything to optimum nutrition’s whey product which dissolved almost immediately without any clumps with just a spoon. This casein protein is a lot different, it is very clumpy when you mix it with a spoon in water, and if you try to mix it with cold milk and a spoon it is almost impossible to fully mix it together. I ended up using a shaker bottle which for water worked well, but with cold milk still ended up leaving clumps.

Effectiveness: 5 Star Rating
I believe this product is truly effective once you get past the taste and lumpiness. You can tell if you let it sit in liquid that it is getting thicker and thicker by the minute which is great for slowing down the absorption rate when it is in your stomach. Thus I believe this product delivers on its intended purpose: to release amino acids in your body for the longest amount of time possible.

Overall/Conclusion: 4 Star Rating
Overall this product works great and is a great value, but the taste and mixability falls short of my liking. Would I buy this product again? Maybe, but I might be tempted to try a different product if I find a decent sale on another casein protein powder.

Pros:
Great Value
Builds Muscle
Great for Recovery
Great Macronutrient Profile

Cons:
Not the Best Tasting
Bad Texture

Great casein protein powder; would definitely buy again!

Introduction:
I’m a senior in high school and have been looking for extra protein to add to my diet so that I can gain some mass. I was told that it is important to have protein before bed and that micellar casein is the best to take before bed because it takes your body hours to digest it.

Flavor/Taste: 5 Star Rating
The flavor I tried was creamy vanilla; it doesn’t taste bad on its own but for the most part I just end up mixing it in with my night time smoothie and it takes amazing with some extra fruit flavors added to it!

Cost/Value: 5 Star Rating
Awesome value; I was able to get this stuff for less than $10 a pound and it lasts me for a long time!

Mixability: 4 Star Rating
This is the part that frustrated me, I was mixing this stuff with cold milk and a spoon and it would clump like crazy. I figured out that I needed a blender bottle and liquid that isn’t so cold (like room temperature tap water). With this method it mixed together nice and easy.

Effectiveness: 5 Star Rating
For sure this stuff really works. I’m not a person who believes that protein powders are the magic cure for everything when it comes to fitness, but I saw noticeable gains in my size and strength by taking this stuff religiously before bed.

Overall/Conclusion: 5 Star Rating
For the price and quality of this protein powder, you really cannot go wrong; on top of that it is made by one of the leading supplement companies out there and there is a reason why they are number one! I would and do recommend this to my friends and I will continue taking this stuff for a long time!

Pros:
Great Value
Fantastic Taste
Builds Muscle
Great for Recovery
Great Macronutrient Profile

Cons:
Doesn't Mix Well

Terrible Taste; very clumpy other than that it is a decent product.

Introduction:
I’m 34 with a fast paced schedule that seems to never end. I chose this protein because I’m always on the go and getting adequate amounts of protein throughout the day just isn’t feasible. I don’t adhere to any diets or really spend much time thinking about the minor things about fitness; for me it just comes down to calories in calories out.

Flavor/Taste: 2 Star Rating
Awful! I tried two different flavors and each one was a disappointment. In order to drink this stuff I had to hold my nose and chug it.

Cost/Value: 5 Star Rating
I feel that the cost of this product is super inexpensive; I think that because optimum nutrition sells so much of this stuff they can afford to keep their profit margins ultra-low and still end up making a ton of money.

Mixability: 2 Star Rating
Another terrible aspect of this protein is how hard it is to mix. I have to mix it with room temperature water in order to semi dissolve this stuff with a spoon. I wouldn’t recommend getting this protein powder unless you have at least a shaker bottle or blender.

Effectiveness: 5 Star Rating
It’s about as effective as it gets, they use only micellar casein, which from what I read is the longest lasting type of protein you can buy.

Overall/Conclusion: 4 Star Rating
I will definitely be trying other casein based protein powders in the future to see if there are other companies that make a product that tastes better and mixes well. If it were not for those two factors I would continue buying optimum nutrition. It is hard for me to say if I would recommend someone else buying this product as I have no other casein protein powders to compare it to.

Pros:
Great Value
Builds Muscle
Great for Recovery
Great Macronutrient Profile

Cons:
Terrible Taste
Doesn't Mix Well

Solid choice for a casein based powder; it is great for before bed!

Introduction:
I’m 23 and I love going to the gym and working out; my life is centered on staying fit and looking great. I chose this protein powder because I needed something that would supply my body with protein throughout the night. I work out 6 days per week so getting that extra protein at night is a must for me!

Flavor/Taste: 4 Star Rating
I chose the chocolate flavor and it wasn’t bad at all! It reminded me of drinking a healthy chocolate shake. That being said, the flavor does not compare at all to optimum nutrition’s whey flavors, which taste like candy.

Cost/Value: 5 Star Rating
The price of this product is one of the main factors of why I bought it; optimum nutrition in general prices there products well and for the quality that you get, you really can’t beat the price.

Mixability: 4 Star Rating
I’m used to optimum nutrition’s whey protein which mixes incredibly easy with just a spoon; this stuff is a bit different. If you want to mix it with a spoon you have to be careful how much powder you add to your liquid. If you add too much you will end up with a clumpy mess. I started mixing it up in a shaker bottle and this helped greatly!

Effectiveness: 5 Star Rating
When it comes to creating protein powders optimum nutrition knows what they are doing, micellar casein is backed by plenty of research showing the long lasting digestion time of it. The great thing about this product is that there is nothing other than micellar casein in it; which essentially maxes out its effectiveness as the king of long lasting protein powders.

Overall/Conclusion: 5 Star Rating
I give this product 5 stars overall; yes it would be nice if it would mix better but honestly any good quality micellar product is going to have the same issues. Some companies will put sodium caseinate or calcium caseinate in their product which makes it mix together really easily but doesn’t last nearly as long as micellar casein. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a long lasting protein powder and I will definitely be buying more of this!

Pros:
Great Value
Builds Muscle
Great for Recovery
Quality Product

Cons:
Doesn't Mix Well
